From a single amphibious vehicle to one of the Gold Coast’s most recognisable tourism experiences, Aquaduck’s journey spans three decades of innovation, resilience and family-friendly adventure.
1996
The First Splash
Aquaduck began as Surfers Safaris, launched by Mitch McIntyre, who transformed a LARC-V amphibious vehicle into Australia’s first amphibious tour bus.
This unique experience introduced a completely new way to explore the Gold Coast – travelling seamlessly on land and water.
Late 1990s
Growing the Concept
Following the success of the original tour, a second amphibious bus was built, allowing the experience to expand and reach more visitors across Surfers Paradise.
2000
A New Chapter
The business was sold to the Cooley family and rebranded as Aquabus Safaris, continuing to grow its presence within the Gold Coast tourism industry.
Early 2000s
Aquaduck is born
As the brand evolved, Aquaduck emerged – introducing the now-iconic “duck” design and establishing itself as a must-do Gold Coast experience.
2019
A New Ownership
In 2019, Aquaduck was acquired by Chris Weide and Tony, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the business.
Post 2020
Expansion to the Sunshine Coast
Following the challenges of COVID-19, Aquaduck expanded its operations by acquiring an existing amphibious tour operation from Airlie Beach and relocating it to the Sunshine Coast.
This marked the launch of Aquaduck Sunshine Coast, extending the experience to a new region and further growing the brand’s presence in Queensland.
2025
A New Home on Cavill Avenue
In 2025, Aquaduck opened its new headquarters at the river end of Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.
This new space strengthened Aquaduck’s presence in the heart of the Gold Coast and enhanced the overall guest experience.

THE STORY BEHIND THE DUCK
1950s
LARC-V Development
The LARC-V amphibious vehicle was developed in the United States during the 1950s for military logistics, designed to transport cargo between land and water.
1960s - 1980s
Military Use
These vehicles were used in major military operations, including the Vietnam War and the Falklands War, proving their durability and versatility.
Today
A Unique Tourism Experience
Only a limited number of LARC-V vehicles remain worldwide. At Aquaduck, these historic amphibious vehicles have been reimagined into a unique tourism experience, offering guests the opportunity to travel seamlessly on both land and water.
